Demerit Points

Demerit points are assigned by the Ministry Of Transportation and determine whether or not your driver’s licence should be renewed.

Demerit points do not affect your insurance. Here’s how they work.

For a speeding ticket:

- 1 to 15 km over the limit = 0 Demerit Points.

- 16 to 29 km over the limit = 3 Demerit Points.

- 30 to 49 km over the limit = 4 Demerit Points.

- 50 km and up over the limit = 6 Demerit Points or a 30 day suspension.

If a driver accumulates 10 points the Ministry Of Transportation has the option to suspend their licence for 30 days. At 15 Demerit Points the ministry WILL suspend their licence for 30 days*

For a G1 licenced driver, they are only are allowed to accumulate 6 Demerit Points before their licence is suspended for 30 days.

For a G2 licenced driver, they are only are allowed to accumulate 9 Demerit Points before their licence is suspended for 30 days.

* A licence suspension will severely affect your insurance rates.
