Update, Canada Road Safety Week

Thanks to all drivers who obeyed the rules of the road and made this city a
safer place to be during Canada Road Safety Week, May 17 – 24, 2005. This
one-week enforcement driven initiative was designed to increase public
compliance with safe driving measures and ultimately to save lives.
Officers issued over 15,100 tickets to motorists whose behaviours put all road
users at risk; including drinking drivers, occupant restraint use, intersection
safety and unsafe speeds and pedestrian violations.
- 41 charges were laid for impaired driving of a motor vehicle.
- 61 people had their drivers licence suspended for 12 hours.
- 48 charges were laid for other Criminal Code Traffic Offences.
- 558 tickets were issued to motorists who failed to buckle up.
- 8346 tickets were issued for speeding offences.
- 115 charges were laid for careless driving.
- 215 charges were laid for driving while licence is under suspension.
- 2344 tickets were issued to motorists for offences such as disobeying traffic
signals, following too closely and disobeying signs
- 3306 additional tickets were issued to motorist for other offences.
- 117 tickets were issued to pedestrians.
This year to date there have been 17 traffic fatalities. All motorists, cyclists
and pedestrians are reminded that road safety is everyone’s responsibility,
obey all traffic laws and be diligent when using our city streets.
