Obtaining a Driver’s License in Quebec

September 6, 2013

Driver's License QuebecWhen it’s time to get your driver’s license, the best way to ensure that things go smoothly is to know the process. Before you will be able to drive legally, you must go through several steps that will earn you your driver’s license. For starters, you will need to meet the criteria for eligibility – you must be over 16 years of age in order to get a learner’s license. You will also need consent from your parents or legal guardians if you are under 18.

Once you meet the requirements, you are eligible to register for a driving course. It will need to contain a classroom component and a practical component and it needs to be approved by the AQTR in order to be valid. It is pretty easy to find a list of Quebec driving school online. Once you settle on the one you want, you will need to fill out some paperwork, provide some legal documents and pay certain fees. Once this step is complete you will receive a learner’s license that will allow you to drive on Quebec roads.

The next step now is to practice driving whenever possible. However, you will need to respect certain rules. Obviously, you are not allowed to drink and drive and you must be accompanied by another driver at all times. While you are taking the course, you will be accompanied by a driving instructor. If you want to drive outside of the course, you will need to be accompanied by a willing driver that has held a license for more than 2 years. You need to be careful during this time. Any violations such as traffic tickets will earn you demerit points. If you get 4 points, you will lose your license.

After successfully holding your learner’s license for 10 months, you become eligible to take the knowledge test. You can register for it online and pay a modest fee to sign up. Should you fail it the first time around, you will need to wait for 28 days before you can retake it.

Once you pass your knowledge test you will be able to take the road test, eventually. Before that, however, you will need to posses the learner’s license for at least one year and finish all of your driving school courses. When you arrive at the testing center you will need to bring paperwork such as proof of ID, learner’s license, SAAQ ID, proof of driving school completion, parental consent and money to pay the license and road test fees.

Upon passing the road test you will receive a provisional license which you must use for 2 years. It gives you mostly the same rights as a regular driver’s license, but you will lose it if you gain 4 demerit points and you are not allowed to be a supervising driver. Finally, once the 24 months have passed, you can receive your full driver’s license.
