Winter Tire Recommendations – previous years
For good winter tires, I go to a tire (only) store and ask if they have any "hardly used" ones that will fit my car. These stores are constantly replacing the tires on other companies rental vehicles that are now being sold as used cars – after less than a year’s use, and only intermittent use, at that! Good tires, great prices!
Three places in Toronto to get a good deal on tires and rims for winter: Steelcase Tires in Markham 905-479-8884 ask for Dave/Dan Tirecraft on Nantucket in Scarborough 416-750-0044 ask for Glen/Jay Active Green and Ross on Midland in Scarborough 416-755-2248 ask for Neil/ Ernie Mega Wheels in Mississauga 905-279-9292 ask for Wayne/Pete.
In Toronto we’ve used Consumer’s Tire. We’ve found that they have quite reasonable prices but watch out, after the first snow it’s hard to get an appointment! Also, I’d like to thank you for the information you’ve passed out over the years regarding the insurance industry. Keep it up.
Regarding good winter tires… "Green Diamond" tires are amazing in the Ottawa winter, environmentally responsible and usable year-round.
Jim’s Tire Service at 26 Elm St, Unit B3, Kitchener, ON. Phone: 519.745.3831. Prices include new stems, balance, and disposal of old tires.
Bramalea Tires, Carries mostly Goodyear & Dunlop. All they do is tires, Very helpful staff & good prices. I had a problem with an out of round tire. The staff was very through in finding the bad tire and replacing it no charge. Great service.

Check out Premium Tire for deals on winter tire and rims. Not only do they have aggressive pricing, their customer service is top notch! They are located in Mississauga on Hurontario St. (Hwy. 10) just south of the 407 on Topflight Drive. They are kinda tucked in behind The Travelodge Hotel. Nice people !.

I believe Fred’s Tire Service , 220 First Street , Orangeville, 519-941-4135, 1-800-430-3107, offers excellent, friendly service and very competitive rates on a wide variety of tires. I have three vehicles with rubber and rims from Fred’s.

Pat Taylor-Van Natter
For the best overall deal on tires, Costco wholesale wins hands down. I just put BF Goodrich AT’s on my Jeep with winter rims. 179.00 per tire plus the 40.00 winter rim. They change the tires, balance, install, and dispose of the old skins at this price. Also, their warranty is the best that I have found! They also include, at no charge, tire rotation. Hope this helps!
Old Kingston rd. just west of Port Union rd. in the Highland Creek area SCARBOROUH
Hi Lee, long time since I have corresponded with you. You helped me out to get ins. with your friend @ Edward Powell ins. about three yrs. ago. I didn’t have a credit card to pay for the rate check fee & you waived the fee for me. My name is Brad Trznadel & I was paying $264.00 a month with a clean driving record, with only a parking ticket way back in 1982. Accident free, ticket free & God bless you Lee, you set me up with Wendy Mundell who got me ins. for $92.00 a month. It went up a whole $5.00 a year later. I Thank You so much for your caring help during that time. As for tires & rims I would recommend "Johns Tires" on Old Kingston rd. just west of Port Union rd. in the Highland Creek area. Very busy, but well worth the wait as "Johns Tires" is known as the best around in that district & probably all of Scarborough. Thx again Lee!
Regards, Brad Trznadel
Have them shipped to your house or an installer near the border.
One good place is Tire Trends. They will mount and balance at no extra charge.
www.tiretrends.com in Canada
I found a good deal on winter tires – BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK – on matching rims – at the following: They are located in BC – shipment was within 5 days – there is NO PST when shipped to Ontario. Staff was very professional and courteous – a pleasure to deal with ( compared to some of the LOCAL dealers ) You may want to check this out and spread the word. My husband and I are very happy with our purchase.
The internet is the place to go, I’ve had a great experience with tiretrends.com These guys carry a large collection at very competitive price. You can select the tires online and read reviews of other drivers too before you buy. Shipping is also cheap and service is great. Canadian Company too”¦
Ebay or Craigslist
http://www.craigslist.com or http://www.ebay.com
You can get good deals on Ebay or craigslist.com, plus LiveDeal.com. We went to the wreckers and got used rims for $60 total, and the store wanted $56 each. You can go to the Tire Rack web page, and they tell you what rims will fit your car. We have a 2006 HONDA CIVIC and they changed the wheels pattern but my husband was able to pick up some at the wreckers that fits a different car but would also fit ours.
I read your newsletter frequently, and just noticed recommendations for Winter Rims and tires. I run an online business that sells auto parts to many car enthusiast clubs, and websites. My prices are VERY competitive, and I like to help out where I can.
