World of Wanderlust: The Countries Canadians Visit MostCanadians love to travel. We’re adventurous and we like to explore. It’s a big world out there and based on the top 15 destinations favoured by Canadian travellers last year we’re all over the map…literally.

Statistics Canada keeps track of where we’re travelling, and while the countries may shift positions slightly on the list from year-to-year, the top countries most popular with Canadian travellers doesn’t usually change much.

Even so, there are some interesting travel trends to note with the latest data recently released.

As usual, the United States tops the list, however, travel to our neighbour to the south has declined for the fourth year in a row. There are also a couple of new additions to the list. For the first time, India and Barbados seem to have caught the attention of Canadian travellers, at the expense of Australia and Jamaica.

Healthy travel tips

While going on vacation is great, it’s important to take the necessary precautions to ensure you’re able to actually enjoy your trip. No one wants to fall ill while on holiday, and the following precautions will help ensure you stay healthy both during and after your vacation.

  • Get vaccinated, if it’s recommended
  • Frequently wash your hands and carry hand sanitizer for those times when soap and water is not available
  • Drink bottled water (and lots of it)
  • Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and by wearing a hat
  • Use insect repellent, especially if you’re going to an area where there’s a concerns about malaria and the Zika virus
  • Pack a health travel kit (bandages, upset stomach medication, antibiotic and anti-fungal ointment)
  • Be cautious of what you eat

Protect yourself by packing travel insurance

The most important precaution you can take when travelling is to buy travel insurance. Illness and injury can happen when you least expect it, and out-of-country medical attention can be costly. Unfortunately, it’s common for Canadian travellers to think they’re covered by their provincial health care plan no matter where they go; however, this is simply not true.

“Your Canadian insurance is almost certainly not valid outside Canada. Your provincial or territorial health plan may cover nothing or only a very small portion of the costs if you get sick or are injured while abroad,” says the Government of Canada. “Hospitals and clinics in some countries have been known to refuse to treat patients who become ill or who have had an accident and who do not have adequate travel health insurance or the money to pay their bills. You could face years of debt paying off the costs of treatment for an illness or accident you suffered abroad. The Government of Canada will not pay your medical bills.”
