Ask Anne-Marie: What Happens If I Can't Get Flood Coverage?

Every week we'll highlight the best question sent to our resident insurance expert, Anne Marie. Thomas. This week's question comes from a reader who has found themselves in the middle of the new flood plain maps generated by the insurance industry.

As flooding becomes more common, more and more insurers are using post-code information to determine flood risk.

Our reader, Maurice asked us this question via our InsuranceHotline.com Facebook page:

"Could you address the current actions of the insurance industry cancelling overland flood insurance for policy holders who reside on or near waterfront either on or near lakes, rivers, streams, marshes etc... anything deemed as a flood plain as a result of last years mapping of Canada by the insurance industry? People as myself are receiving registered letters only days before our policy renewal making it impossible to seek out another insurance company. That said, I have contacted eight companies so far and they have all denied me overland flood coverage based on my postal code even though my house has never been flooded."

Anne Marie. was able to direct Maurice to a potential solution.

"Hello, I understand your frustration. Many insurance companies are declining to offer flood insurance in areas deemed to be high risk. Your best option might be to try a non-standard home insurer. April Insurance might be able to help you. Here is a link to their website: https://www.april.ca/contact-us/"
