How North York auto insurance works

While public transportation exists in the area, North York is a suburb that demands vehicle ownership.

Auto insurance works the same way in North York as it does in the rest of the province. Ontario drivers are covered under a no-fault insurance system, which means in the event of an accident, all drivers involved will process individual claims through their own insurance companies to get coverage for damages and injuries.

Car insurance is also mandatory, and driving without basic coverage is illegal. A basic policy contains third-party liability, statutory accident benefits, and uninsured automobile insurance.

Ontarians buy car insurance from private companies, unlike in some provinces where a government insurer provides coverage. It means drivers in the province have a large selection of providers to choose from. The Financial Services Regulatory Agency of Ontario (FSRA), the province's car insurance regulator, encourages drivers to compare quotes from multiple insurance companies.

But getting quotes from multiple insurance companies can be time-consuming. Luckily, rate comparison sites like InsuranceHotline.com bring you quotes from multiple companies in the time it would take to source one. InsuranceHotline.com users can compare quotes from 50+ Canadian insurance providers.

Changes to Ontario's auto insurance in 2024

Ontario is currently in the process of reforming how auto insurance works in the province. The goal of this is to reduce the amount of coverage drivers are forced to take out, and in turn, lower their premiums.

Some of the proposed changes include:

  • Option to remove the caregiver benefit, housekeeping and home maintenance expenses benefit, income replacement benefit, and death and funeral benefits (benefits for medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care will remain mandatory, however).
  • Making auto insurance companies the first payer for medical and rehabilitation benefits (at the moment, a person's private medical insurance is the first payer). This change is meant to streamline the claims process and lead to earlier resolution.
  • Option to remove direct compensation for property damage (DCPD) coverage (in effect since January 2024).

How much does car insurance in North York cost?

According to Insuramap, the average North York auto insurance premium is $2,172.75 per year. That is lower than the Toronto average of $1,953 (North York and other Toronto suburbs included).

Without a detailed breakdown of claims activity in North York (insurance companies keep that private), it's safe to say the discrepancy is partly due to differences in urban density and driver population. Toronto is a much more dense city, with work, home and leisure closely connected. As a result, fewer people are using their cars (or even own cars) to get where they need to go. Although it may be a cliché, Toronto's core may have younger people living there, many of whom wait to get a driver's license later in life.

On the other hand, North York is a spread-out bedroom community consisting of commuters, families, malls and big-box stores with ample parking. With more cars and drivers, there are more opportunities for accidents and claims. Insurance companies recognize that and adjust their North York auto insurance accordingly.

It is home to many new Canadians and is also the site of several industrial plants, all of which will affect insurance rates.

Factors that influence your North York auto insurance premium

Your age

Insurance companies care about your age. Not because they want to buy you a birthday gift, but because they use it to determine the risk you present as a potential client.

Generally, younger drivers are considered a greater risk on the road (less experience and perhaps less safe). As a result, they will have higher North York car insurance rates. Alternatively, older, more experienced drivers can look forward to declining rates.

The vehicle you drive

Not all cars are created equal. Higher-end vehicles often come with maintenance costs and a greater potential for theft. They, therefore, are riskier and more expensive to insure. More reliable, less expensive cars with safety features are considered less risky and are often less to insure.

Where you live

Your neighbourhood is important when assessing your North York car insurance. Some areas have a higher crime rate and potential for theft, while others may be safer. Also, insurers will look at the density of the area and the claim history to assess risk.

Your driving record

Your driving record is very important to car insurance companies serving North York. More experienced drivers with a clean record can look forward to lower rates than someone with a history of unsafe driving and accidents.

Your insurance history

Your insurance history also determines your North York auto insurance rate. The fewer claims you make, the less risk associated with your driving record and the cheaper your insurance will be.

The coverage options you choose to include in your policy

While having basic insurance is mandatory in North York, you are free to take on optional coverage. Optional coverage includes products that pay for a new vehicle (when you were the one that caused the accident) and those that ensure your premium stays at a certain rate (also after you cause an accident). However, all of this comes at an extra cost. Conversely, stopping at basic insurance coverage will keep rates down.

Your policy's deductibles

The deductible on your insurance policy is an amount you must pay for repairs or claims before your benefits kick in. As a result, the higher your deductible (meaning, the more you are willing to pay upfront), the better your insurance rate can be. The opposite is true if you choose to have a low deductible.

Bundling with other insurance products, such as home insurance

Bundling is a way to save on North York car insurance by using one provider for many services, usually home insurance.

Gender and marital status

North York auto insurance companies look at gender and marital status in risk profiles. Young, single males, for example, are considered higher risk drivers than women or married women. Married drivers are assumed to take fewer risks on the road because they have more obligations and responsibilities than single folks.

The company's own insurance claims history

To pay claims, an insurance company has to have capital available. As claims increase, cash reserves dwindle. As a result, rates may increase to replenish those cash reserves.

What can I do to get cheaper car insurance in North York?

Shop around

Comparison shopping is always a good idea. Sites like InsuranceHotline.com can help you receive instant quotes from North York's top insurance companies to find the cheapest car insurance.

Increase deductibles

Before insurance companies pay out benefits, a deductible payment is required – something the driver has to pay out of pocket before benefits kick in.

It's important to choose an insurance deductible wisely. The higher the deductible (meaning, the more you are personally willing to pay), the cheaper your North York car insurance rates will be. The lower the deductible, the more your North York auto insurance rates will be because the insurer will have to assume more risk, and the more they'll pay out.

Pay your premium annually instead of monthly

North York car insurance companies incentivize lump-sum premium payments by offering discounts.

The downside for the driver is that you have to have the available cash to pay it all in one shot — but the discount could be worthwhile. Talk to your broker or insurance provider to learn more about their discount offerings.

Bundle all policies

Many North York car insurance companies also offer home insurance. To convert you into a long-term customer, they will offer a discount on all insurance rates if you bundle all your insurance products with them. Bundling is a great money-saving move if you are already looking for other insurance products or trying to reduce overall costs. You can save 5% to 15% overall.

Insure all vehicles

Similar to bundling, insuring all vehicles under one North York auto insurance company will garner discounts from the provider. You can save 10% to 20% by insuring all vehicles under one roof.

Change tires seasonally

Putting on winter tires reduces risk during poor driving conditions. Your North York car insurance company will offer discounts of about 5% in return.

Compare annually

Each year North York auto insurance companies may change their discount policies, offer new ones, change rates or assess risks differently. It's important to compare each year to stay updated on other insurance companies' deals.

Use a telematics device

North York car insurance companies will offer discounts to drivers to allow them to monitor their driving habits. Opting in can shave as much as 25% off your bill.

Ask about discounts

There are discounts beyond winter tires and bundling. Ask your provider about senior discounts, memberships to associations and alumni specials.

Driver’s education

A driver’s education class will teach young drivers how to drive defensively on Ontario roads and, if you're already fully licenced, enhance the ones you already possess. North York car insurance companies consider that a plus as it reduces risk and encourages safe driving behaviours. Ask your provider if taking a class will help reduce your North York car insurance premiums.
