If you have recently moved to Oshawa or the surrounding area, it's the perfect time to compare Oshawa car insurance rates to make sure your current insurance provider is still giving you the best rate at your new address.
Other optimal times to compare rates include when you get a new vehicle, add or remove drivers from your policy, have a baby, reach a milestone like turning 25 or retiring, get married or purchase a home. Big changes are often an opportunity for big savings.
Oshawa auto insurance 101
Car insurance is a necessity. It's illegal to drive without it and the consequences are hefty if you get caught. We're talking big fines and possible licence suspension. Because it's required by law, many drivers mistakenly think all car insurance is the same. It's not. Car insurance rates can vary considerably and are always changing. The best way to ensure you're getting the best Oshawa car insurance rate is to shop around. Here's what you should be looking for.
Optional coverage and endorsements
Every province has compulsory minimums that you must have as part of your policy. However, there are optional coverages and endorsements that you can add to your policy for an additional fee. The two most well-known are:
- Collision coverage: this covers damage to your vehicle as a result of an impact of collision with another vehicle or object.
- Comprehensive coverage: this protects your car against damage caused by events like theft and vandalism.
The majority of Oshawa drivers (and drivers in general) opt to add one or both of these types of coverages to their policy. Depending on your vehicle, you may or may not decide to invest in this protection. If you're uncertain, be sure to ask your licenced insurance professional.
What goes into determining your auto insurance rates
Many factors are taken into consideration when determining your auto insurance rate. These include:
- Your driving record
- Your insurance/claims history
- The type of car you drive
- How often and how far you drive
- Where you live
- Your chosen coverages
- Your deductible
- The insurance company's claims history
- Your age (discounts are sometimes available after you turn 25 and once you retire)
More about your driving record
There are multiple factors that insurance companies take into consideration when determining your car insurance rate, one of which is your driving record. This includes:
- How long you've been licensed
- Any tickets or collisions
- Licence suspensions, etc.
Based on InsuranceHotline.com data, we found that 72 per cent of Oshawa drivers have a clean driving history with no tickets, accidents or licence suspensions; 12 per cent of drivers admit to having at least one traffic ticket, and 12 per cent also admit to having been involved in at least one collision. The remaining drivers have at least one ticket and one accident (2.61 per cent).
