About Mazda car insurance

When it comes to car insurance, safety often equals lower premiums. According to Insurance Institute for High Safety’s (IIHS) 2023 list of cars with top scores crash tests and other safety evaluations, Honda, Lexus, Toyota and Mazda are some of the safest car brands around. In fact, given that IIHS has made its tests tougher over the years, their vehicles may be some of the safest ones ever made (so far).

For those of you who don’t know, IIHS is an independent, nonprofit North American organization dedicated to improving car safety through research and evaluation of vehicles and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals.

Every Mazda vehicle made IIHS’s 2023 list, including Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-5, CX-50 and CX-9.

IIHS’s more demanding TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ requirements have replaced its original side crash safety test with the updated evaluation from 2021. This new test involves 82% more energy than the original one, and to succeed, vehicles must earn an ‘Acceptable’ or ‘Good’ rating. Mazda Mazda3, CX-5 and CX-9 all earned ‘Good’ ratings on this test.

So, if you’re looking for a car that will keep you and your loved ones safe, while also letting you save on car insurance, then Mazda vehicles might be worth checking out – especially if you’re in the market for a new car.

Understanding CLEAR ratings for car insurance

CLEAR, or the Canadian Loss Experience Rating, is a system insurance companies in Canada use to assess how likely it is for a particular car to have a claim filed for it and how much it will cost. This includes evaluating how often the car gets stolen and how often it gets into car crashes.

Cars are ranked based on a CLEAR score. The higher the score, the higher the insurance premium, and vice versa.

This means that an expensive car may have a lower premium if it's unlikely to get into an accident or get stolen. Having some or all of the following can decrease your car’s premiums, even if it’s expensive:

  • An advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS)
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Dual and side airbags
  • Side-impact door reinforcements
  • Anti-theft device
  • Winter tires

The opposite is also possible. If your car is on the cheaper side, it can cost more to insure, especially if it has the following:

  • Minimal or basic loss-prevention features
  • Lower-than-average or limited safety and accident-prevention equipment

How to interpret CLEAR data

CLEAR’s benchmark score is 100. So, if a car scores 133, it is 33% above the benchmark, and if it scores 73, then it’s 27% below the benchmark. The lower score, the lower the premium and the other way around.

You can view CLEAR data for the following kinds of coverage claims:

  • Collision claims statistics
  • Comprehensive claims statistics, including theft
  • Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD)
  • Accident Benefits (AB)

Furthermore, the cars listed are all colour-coded, allowing you to tell immediately whether your car has a high number of claims or not. Here’s how the colour-coding works:

  • Red, if the score is more than 120 (20% above the average)
  • Yellow, if the score is between 81 and 120
  • Green, if the score is less than 81 (19% below the average)

Mazda3 car insurance cost

Mazda3 has received a ‘Good’ rating on IIHS’s 2023 TOP SAFETY PICKS test, which makes it a relatively safe car. But does safety also mean cheap premiums in this case? Let’s find out.

DISCLAIMER: All our age data is based on a specific profile – that of a male driver with a clean driving record in Toronto, Ontario, who has basic mandatory car insurance coverage and drives a 2023 Mazda Mazda3 GS 4DR, 10,000 km per year.

About the age data

Despite Mazda3’s good crash test results, it is one of the most expensive Mazda cars to insure. That’s because Mazda3 is considered a sports car, which often means higher theft numbers and more expensive repairs upon collision. The costs are especially high for younger drivers, as they tend to pose a higher risk to insurers than older drivers.

If you look at the latest data from the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), you’ll notice that the newer Mazda3 models score relatively high when it comes to claims filed for them.

The ratings across various coverages for 2020 Mazda3 GS 4DR – the latest model for which there is data – are as follows:

Note: 100 is the average rating in each category, and the higher the number, the less favourable the rating.

About the model year data

The premiums hold steady from model year to model year, indicating that the older models are as likely to have claims filed for them as the newer ones. The car scores high for no-fault (DCPD) claims, so the cost of repairs is probably one of the biggest reasons why the premiums are where they are. Even so, the premiums are not nearly as expensive as they could have been, especially when you consider the fact that Mazda3 is a sporty car.

For comparison, the average premium for the 2023 Honda Accord – Mazda3’s competitor – is $5,234 per year (based on the same profile as mentioned above). That’s roughly 34% more than the premium for the 2023 Mazda3.

Mazda CX-5 car insurance cost

Like the Mazda3, the CX-5 has received a ‘Good’ rating on IIHS’s 2023 TOP SAFETY PICKS, but as you’ll see below, it’s significantly cheaper to insure.

About the age data

According to the IBC, the CX’s collision and DCPD numbers are all both above the average - though they are without a doubt lower than Mazda3’s numbers. The vehicle also scores below the average for theft, however, which is a blessing given how frequent car theft is in Canada these days.

The ratings across various coverages for the 2020 Mazda CX-5 GS 4DR AWD – the latest model for which there is data – are as follows:

  • Collision: 137
  • Comprehensive (which includes theft): 99
  • DCPD: 169

Note: 100 is the average rating in each category, and the higher the number, the less favourable the rating.

2019$3,210
2020$3,160
2021$3,160
2022$3,381
2023$3,250

About the model year data

The CX-5's premiums also stay consistent from model year to model year, though they are slightly cheaper than Mazda3’s premiums. This is likely because it’s an SUV, which often tend to be safer than their sportier cousins. In the case of the CX-5 in particular, the lower number of DCPD claims is what’s giving it an advantage over Mazda3.

For comparison, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is only marginally cheaper to insure than its competitor, the 2023 Honda CR-V, which costs $3,496 a year to insure as opposed to $3,250 (based on the same profile as mentioned above). This is likely because the CR-V scores much higher when it comes to theft than the CX-5.

Mazda CX-3 car insurance cost

The CX-3 didn’t score as well in crash tests as the vehicles above, yet it boasts the cheapest premiums. That’s probably because the CX-3 has the lowest MSRP – and likely costs less to repair.

About the age data

If you’re young, the Mazda CX-3 is a great car to own because its MSRP is low and so is its insurance – relatively speaking.

The scores shared by the IBC are low across all coverage – for collision, theft and DCPD – which is likely why the premiums are equally low.

The ratings across various coverages for 2019 Mazda CX-3 GS 4DR 2WD – the latest model for which there is data – are as follows:

  • Collision: 65
  • Comprehensive (which includes theft): 71
  • DCPD: 104

Note: 100 is the average rating in each category, and the higher the number, the less favourable the rating.

About the model year data

Young drivers who want to save some money on their car insurance might consider the CX-3 as their first vehicle. Rates trend lower than its cousins, since the car is cheaper to repair and seems to be less likely to be stolen. Its annual premiums don’t change much from model year to model year, but they do occasionally dip slightly below $3,000, which is a plus for younger drivers.
